Southampton city centre hotels offer a good choice within walking distance of the shopping and commercial area of Southampton. Your choice is dominated by chain hotels, mostly in comparatively modern purpose built buildings.

The commercial and shopping area is to the north of the Old Town, the original waterside settlement, but it only takes 10 minutes to walk down to this historic area from the modern city centre to the north.

The most central hotel is the Mercure Dolphin Hotel housed in an old 13th century coaching inn style building. This is in the heart of main shopping area on the main High Street (Main Street).

At the north end of the modern city centre shopping area is the governmental offices, central library. judiciary buildings area and a large area of parkland, imaginatively called the West and East Park. On the far side of the park from the commercial/shopping area are two hotels, the Jury's Inn, a modern tower block (see picture right) and a more economic independent option the Southampton Park, quite close to the bus and train stations. To the north-east of the city centre, but easily walkable is the Premier Inn Southampton City Centre. Premier Inn is the largest no frills, budget chain in the UK. Its got a name for offering value for money rather than being very cheap and is the equivalent of a good 3 star hotel without some of the frills.

South of the city centre is the waterside area where there are some very attractive hotel options, especially if you are taking a cruise. Again, these hotels are only 10 minutes walk from the heart of the city centre and waterfront is being developed as a leisure/shopping area too.

The consistently cheapest hotel to stay in the centre of Southampton is the ETAP hotel. Built and opened in 2010, this is an ultra no-frills hotel. The ETAP is owned by the Accor group that also own the Ibis and Novotel hotels next door to the ETAP.

Mercure Dolphin Hotel - $$

The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin is a four star hotel that has stood in the heart of the city for over 500 years. The Mercure Southampton is owned by Accor that also owns the Novotel, ETAP and Ibis hotels in Southampton. This is the most traditional hotel of the Accor portfolio in Southampton.

Situated on Southampton's main shopping street, the historic old town, museums, parks and city walls are right on your doorstep.

The hotel is famous for hosting Jane Austen's 18th birthday party in 1793.

All bedrooms are non-smoking and have WiFi access, flat screen TV with satellite channels, hair dryer, iron and board, safe, tea and coffee making facilities and direct dial telephone.

Southampton Park Hotel - $$$

The Southampton Park Hotel is a comfortable mid-range hotel where you just stroll across the park opposite into the very centre of the city. The hotel is relatively close to both train and coach stations.

The hotel boasts a heated indoor pool with a spa bath and sauna. This is supplemented with an air-conditioned gym and beauty treatments are available.

Guests can relax with a drink or enjoy a light lunch in the contemporary bar and lounge.

The hotel has 72 individually designed en-suite bedrooms including standard and premier rooms, with some premier rooms having balconies overlooking the attractive Watt’s Park. Premier Inn City Centre - $$$

The Premier Inn City Centre is one of two Premier Inn hotels in Southampton city centre, the other Premier Inn West Quay is down on the waterfront. Premier Inn is the UK's leading mid-range budget hotel chain with a reputation for value for money and high standards when benchmarked against major competitors.

Each well-equipped room features a flat-screen satellite TV, free tea and coffee and a private bathroom with a hairdryer.

The hotel has a 24-hour reception desk and some rooms can take 2 adults and up to 2 children (under 15 years). The 2 children also get a free full breakfast when accompanied by an adult eating a full breakfast. An all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast is available each morning plus a wide continental selection.

Jury's Inn Southampton - $$$

The Jury's Inn Southampton is a large modern tower hotel with 270 rooms in the middle of a large roundabout at the northern end of the commercial city centre. It is the largest hotel in Southampton and cannot be mistaken as the main road into Southampton from London goes around the hotel.

Its just a 5 minute stroll across the park opposite to the main shopping and commercial area.

Large air conditioned rooms include those for families. There are also executive rooms available.

As well as a value for money restaurant there is a coffee bar and bar available.

Etap Southampton - $ - Cheapest Hotel In Town

The Etap hotel is a brand new block, situated adjacent to the Novotel and Ibis hotels - all are owned by Accor hotels.

This is not a run down dump with nothing to offer but a low price, this is a brand spanking new purpose built hotel offering 'no frills' rooms.

If you just want a bed in a modern, clean hotel at lowest cost and somewhere safe for your luggage, this may be for you. There is a McDonalds next door and a large retail park on your doorstep.

Modern, comfortable room that can accommodate up to 3 people (in most countries), with a shower, toilet, and satellite TV. Charge for parking.

Ibis Southampton - $$ - Close to Train/Coach Stations

Within sight of the train and coach stations with the cities major shopping mall opposite. Located next door to the Novotel and Etap hotel, all owned by the Accor group and sharing the same car park and approach road.

Faces the dock gates for the Mayflower and City Cruise terminals, some people walk to these cruise terminals from the Ibis. A McDonald's is next door and plenty of other restaurants are within a few minutes walk.
